“Mr Obama The Fashionista?”

Well for a split second. Well....not even the president, just the limousine slowly passing by. But for many it is as close as we will ever get to the 44th president, and we have to appreciate every little glance we get! Because President Obama attended Anna Wintour’s Fundraiser in the Village, massive traffic was created in NYC, but for the president we can endure a day of traffic! Right?
At a dinner prior to heading to Wintour's Village home, in the high-end restaurant the Four Seasons,
Obama was side by side to some fashionista royalty, Vera Wang, Diane von Furstenberg,
Calvin Klein, Harvery Weinstein Tory Burch. Our President was Chitchatting from table to table
about various topics, politics (no surprise) to fashion. Wow! We never knew Obama was so stylish,
mentioning his favorite suit designer from Chicago in the conversation. But one thing that might or
might not surprise us all is that President Obama dined...alone, in a private room alongside with his
two aids! I guess he didn’t want anyone seeing him chow down that steak, broccoli and potatoes.
It’s okay Mr. President, we all eat!
One thing we know for sure is that we love when our President comes to visit our city, so
President Obama SoHo invites you once again, don’t make us wait to long!

TAYE DIGGS TAKES SOHO - June 12, 2010

Known for its beauty and trend setting, the streets of SoHo were taken over illegally by a group of about 14 loud and boisterous motorcycles on Sunday afternoon.
Who were these bikers? They were the posse that was going around with Taye Diggs yesterday. The corner of West Broadway and Grand St. was where this motorcycle group decided to set up shop and take over the SoHo Sunday afternoon scene. It took place just outside the world-renown French restaurant, Felix, where Mr. Diggs decided to grab a
quick lunch. This is not out of the ordinary since Felix is known for drawing hip crowds which
sometimes include major celebrities. The posse that Taye Diggs brought with him did not announce
their performance and it came as a total and welcome surprise to anyone who happened to be in the
area. Perhaps best know for his role in the Broadway musical Rent and the popular movie, How
Stella Got Her Groove Back,
Diggs set up quite the juxtaposition at the usually serene and beautiful
corner. Usual SoHo on a warm and bright Sunday afternoon: Tourists, shoppers, mimosas, muted
dresses, trendy bicycles, and bustling bars and restaurants. It is one of the few times and places
where hipsters, yuppies, tourists, and old-timers coincide. As gorgeous young women toted little
shopping bags and rode around on fixed gear bikes in their tiny-trendy dresses, this fashionable
version of the Hells Angels revved their engines and popped wheelies all, by the way, not wearing
their helmets.
Somehow they were able to display their biking prowess without the aide of police barricades or
police presence of any kind. Traffic came to a standstill in the already congested area and bicyclists
were forced to wait until the performance was through until they could ride through the area.
While it may have caused only a slight inconvenience to pedestrians, motorists, and cyclists alike,
SoHo’s version of motocross seemed to be a tremendous attention grabber. Tourists and native
inhabitants alike lined the street to take pictures or just observe this rarely seen New York event.
Most of the crowd seemed to enjoy the bonus treat of this obscure stunt.
Thanks to the posse of bikers that Taye Diggs provided those who had the time on the lazy June
Sunday afternoon were treated to a real “Only in New York,” moment.

The Legacy of Collective Hardware

By Steve Lewis:

The demise, departure, destruction—er, padlocking—of Collective Hardware has resulted in name-calling, accusations, innuendo, bold face lies and controversy. In other words: Same as it ever was. If only this place had collected this much hype in its last few months, they wouldn’t be hocking the hardware now. The closing of Collective Hardware has been volatile, thanks to the aforementioned poor journalism from the mouths of babes who just don’t understand nightlife, try as they might. My emails, Facebook, and cell phone are a battleground of “he saids, she saids” with some “never-evers”
thrown in for good—or bad—measure. I doubt the full story of the venue’s downfall will ever come
out and, if it does, it will never be believed.
It is hard to summarize a concept as big as Collective. Looking back I guess it’s easy to throw
stones and point fingers, but maybe it’s enough to say “they tried.” In a world where acceptance
has replaced exceptional, Collective said “go fuck yourself.” They were never polite in their
ambitions; they preferred to go through walls rather than around them.
They’d often smash a hole when the door would have done nicely. Sometimes things became
unreasonable, not logical, extremely dysfunctional and chaotic and, at times, unacceptable.
I think therein lies the glory: at its worst it was at its best. All the negatives may have actually been
requirements. It was artistic anarchy.

Location: Apple Store SOHO
the TV show “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” The format of the event was an interview between Jimmy and Questlove, which turned out to be a heartfelt conversation , yet light and very funny .  Their questions were so simple and unexpected, but somehow revealed more than you could imagine! The audience was completely enthralled in every word they shared.  It felt like we were all hanging out at Jimmy’s house in the den (yes, all 350 of us), kicking back with some brewskis and talking about life.

The main outcome of this event was the bond that Jimmy and Questlove have.
As most of you know, Questlove is the drummer from the Grammy award winning band,
The Roots.  As of this past year The Roots are the in house
band for “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.”  Even though we don’t see it on air, these two guys have
formed a really close friendship.  They didn’t come out and say “we’re close”; it was the interaction
that revealed the respect and genuine care they have for one another.

In the midst of their questions for one another, we learned that Jimmy used to stand in front of his
mirror as a kid for 4 hours at a time practicing impersonations.  He did a killer Bill Cosby for us! Oh,
and when Questlove was born, a psychologist told his mom he was going to be an explorer and do
great things.  When he started setting up drum sets with the furniture at the age of 3, his Mom just let
him “explore”, and thank goodness she did!  Here’s a question for you…if these talented guys were
not in their current line of work, what would they be doing? One said they would be a photographer,
the other a postman.  I’ll leave the profession matching up to you.

When you’re in the neighborhood, stop into the Apple SoHo store, it’s an experience in itself.
They are always hosting great events that are completely FREE.  Check out the calendar on their
website for the events calendar.

Location: Peter Lik Gallery, 419 W.Broadway

Once a month, the Peter Lik gallery in Soho invites the public for an evening of wine, cheese, and of course, breathtaking and brilliant photography.  Peter Lik is known as the most important landscape photographer alive.  As you step into the gallery, the mood is relaxed and inviting; you’ll enjoy soft music in the background as you slowly walk through the maze like hallways.  I say slowly, because I uncontrollably stopped at every photograph I saw, and simply stared..with amazement.  His work is surreal; you have to see it with your own eyes to believe it.  I was trying to guess where every photo was taken, but it’s impossible, I challenge you! Lik spends his life traveling
the world, visiting places most humans have never seen.  He will spend up to 4 hours just waiting in
one spot, for that magical shot.  Visit the Peter Lik gallery in Soho so you can experience his
extraordinary work.  The wine and cheese are amazing too, enjoy!

"Skinny Jeans, with Skinny Genes"
I know that you, like myself (and millions of other fashion lovers) are a big fan of skinny jeans.  It's a known fact that when you put on a great pair of skinnies, you look and feel like a superstar.  It's also a fact that after a few hours of wearing them, Gravity sets in, and they begin to droop, bunch and ride up. This has always been the annoying trade-off associated with the Skinny Jean,
But things are about to change....
Popular denim brand, Red Engine decided it was time to fight science with science. They made it their mission to stop gravity in it's tracks, by creating a stylish
selection of "Skinny Jeans, with Skinny Genes!"  Teaming up with renowned fiber scientists at
DOW XLA™
, Red Engine's Fall '09 collection is cut from high quality denim made with DOW XLA™
Re:Flex4™ Fiber. This patent-pending stretch denim fabric technology adapts to the body's
silhouette with a custom-like fit, thanks to it's multi-dimensional 4 way flexibility and sole objective:
keep skinny jeans, well... skinny.
Red Engine's DOW XLA™Re:Flex4™ Jeans ($144 - $170, at fine boutiques nationwide) are the
first and only skinny jeans scientifically engineered to stay comfortable, sexy and stylish from the
moment you put them on, to the moment you take them off.

The Wild Horses of Sable Island
Amidst the chaos of New York City, Roberto Dutesco's photo gallery is a sanctuary, reminding viewers of the beauty of nature, untouched by man. 'The Wild Horses of Sable Island' exhibit opened in 2006 and is one of the longest running exhibits of a single artist.  The photographer and filmmaker's own journey began years earlier, in 1994. Dutesco discovered Sable Island, the site of over 500 shipwrecks, by chance, while watching late-night television. He has been working on the project for the past 15 years and he says, "the project has always had its own mind." It is as though the gallery exists as a
magnet and people come from all places and paths of life to experience the energy in the space.
Dutesco says: " My wish has always been to inspire people with my photographs.  I believe in beauty,
and the aesthetics of the energy that is attached to all things.  Nature is incredible if you stop and
observe it.  I hope that the energy in some of my photographs will linger with the viewer and inspire them
further – in a positive way." The philosophy of each photo is to feel transported to the island itself, however,
Sable Island is a place most of us will never be able
to visit.  'In a world where everything is just a plane ride away," says Dutesco, "people pay more
attention when something is off limits."

The life-sized images of untamed equines transcend barriers of language and religion and lends
itself city-dwellers, suburbanites and tourists alike. Aside from dogs, says Peter Tunney, the gallery's
curator, the horse is an animal that is adored by everyone. Viewers often feel an insurgence of
emotion and energy expressed by the photographs of wild horses and patrons sometimes find
themselves shedding tears while stopping to admire a photograph.  Most do not know why they
express the emotion that they are feeling, perhaps, offers Dutesco, "people pick up on what the the
Sable horses have - no predators, no fear, no worries."

The gallery is definetly a welcome destination to rejuvinate the mind and spirit and while you're in
the neighborhood, be sure to check out other great galleries in Soho!

John Lennon In SoHo
lennon visaWhen one thinks about John Lennon and his legacy, you can’t help but recall his indomitable NYC presence in the late 70’s; and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Annex in SoHo is looking to celebrate his life here in the city he loved. The exhibition, created especially for the Annex location by Yoko Ono and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame VP Jim Henke, features sartorial treasures (Lennon’s famous New York City shirt), previously unseen papers with hand-written lyrics, and the green card Lennon fought so hard for among other Lennon artifacts. Ono was present at the launch party this past May,
and truly this one of a kind exhibit would not be possible without her collaboration.
A portion of all ticket sales will be given to Lennon and Ono’s Spirit Foundations to help further their
already considerable philanthropic efforts. The exhibit is on-going, with later hours in true rock
and roll fashion.

Guess? Flagship Reopens in Soho

guessYou may have noticed that the main drag of Soho seemed a bit empty as of late. Guess?’s flagship between prince and spring had shuttered its doors with no fanfare, and with the Marciano store opening down the block, many thought that was the end of the shop. But not so! Guess? is back baby.

Turns out the twelve-year old store was simply in need of a makeover. Guess? execs consider this store to be the launching pad for their company-wide shift to focusing more on denim and less on tight, satin party dresses.
Which in our book, is a good thing.

Judging by the pictures, the design is a drastic overhaul from the South Beach bound shininess
of the last store incarnation. The denim, priced in the mid-tier range from $108-$148, certainly
seems to have a stronger presence on the sales floor now, and things in general just a look a bit
more down-town and Soho appropriate.
The store is open to the public now (as of the July 4th weekend), but Guess?, being a savvy brand,
is feteing the event with actress Michelle Trachtenberg on July 22nd. The launch will double as an
Oxfam benefit, so you can feel a bit socially conscious while sipping champagne.

Visit Guess? at:

537 Broadway

No Purchase Necessary

sicisWhile strolling around my favorite neighborhood I stumbled upon this amazing store, SICIS.  I’m sure most of you have just walked by it and decided that it looked to elaborate and expensive to even walk into, but do not let it fool you.  As you climb the stairs through this 3-story building each floor is more spectacular then the next.  It’s filled with various designed mosaics including these three dimensional pieces like the mannequin pictured above.  These pieces of art fill the apartments of the rich, but for someone like myself it’s a treat to walk through the showroom like it is an art gallery; no purchase necessary.
Come check it out, it’s located on
470 Broome Street @ Greene Street.
You can also visit there website at

The British chain store, Topshop has come to SOHO!

Top ShopOn April 2nd, Topshop had their grand opening and it was a mad house! Kate Moss came out to say hello before letting people inside to see her new line. She looked beautiful in jeans, a bright green top and a leather jacket. This will be her 9th collection for Topshop. There were people lined up around blocks waiting to get in. Obviously the people who shop at Topshop have top fashion sense because everyone on line was waiting nonchalantly, dressed in the edgiest of fashions.
The Topshop employees were walking around wearing Union Jack scarves around their necks,
and tan fedoras. They were handing out free snacks and refreshments along with gift cards
ranging from $5.00 to $500.00 !!
Sorry, time to squeeze my way through the crowd and take advantage of all the great deals!
See you around SOHO NYC !!

SohoDesign pre-launch party at Delicatessen!

Top ShopOn March 25th, hundreds of people came to Delicatessen, a trendy restaurant in the Soho, Nolita border, to celebrate the pre-launching of SohoDesign Magazine.

SohoDesign Magazine will be the next big thing in Soho, and will include among other things
a map of the area with all of the stores listed. It was a great crowd, and everyone bonded and

New York Fashion Week, Parties and Events in Soho.

For the last week we have been busy attending New York
Fashion Week, which sadly came to a close on Friday. Celebrities, designers, photographers and more came together at the tents at Bryant Park and made me realize once again why I love this city! It truly is the fashion capitol of the world! Many of the after parties were held right here in SoHo, the neighborhood where nightlife meets fashion. Bloomingdales SoHo was host to the Style 360 party, hosted by Nigel Barker and Elle.com on Monday evening. On Tuesday, September 9th SoHo was filled with celebrities attending various after parties including: the Y-3 SoHo store launch party, the Prada party,
Vivienne Tam Party at 40 Mercer, and Heidi Kum hosted an event at Bloomingdales SoHo
for Jordache. The following day the Subversive Jewelry Spring 2009 Collection was held at
Kisan SoHo on Greene Street. Overall, fashion week previewed some excellent designs for
Spring 2009 and we are excited that SoHo was host to many of the exclusive parties and events!

NEW NIKE STORE IN SOHO

soho nikeOn Wednesday night Nike closed down Mercer Street in SoHo to throw quite a bash for their new store opening! This event was invitation only and featured a stage and special performances. Now we know SoHo is known for its fashion, of course, including the many high-end shoe stores selling the ever so dangerous stilettos (those cobblestone SoHo streets are quite a challenge). However, recently we have seen a great deal of new sneaker stores opening in the area.
This Nike store will offer a new service, Bespoke, which will offer an appointment service
allowing customers to work directly with designers in creating their own customized kicks!
The store will officially open on Thursday, at 21 Mercer Street.

ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAME IN SOHO!

rock and roll sohoGet ready rock fans, Bloomberg announced today that a Rock N Roll hall of fame annex will open on Mercer Street. Set to open in November, it will feature some great artists and memorabilia such as Bruce Springsteen's 1957 Chevy, (which Bloomberg sat in for some candid shots on Wednesday)!
Bloomberg stood along music idols Billy Joel and Clive Davis as well as officials from the Hall of fame to announce the planned opening of the Hall.
Bloomberg stated "This is where Ed Sullivan met the Beatles, where Lou Reed took a walk
on the wild side." That's right, it's about time we pay tribute to the Rock N Roll side of SoHo!
Well, in the midst of being a bit depressed summer is approaching its closure I must say
we now have a reason to look forward for November!

No.. It's not a new Iphone..
Apple presents THE JONAS BROTHERS!

jonas brothers sohoThe scene outside of the Apple Store appeared as if they were releasing a new Iphone on Tuesday. However, we were a bi concerned since it consisted primarily of teeny bopper girls (I understand today's youth is in with technology but come on, I don't even have an Iphone yet!)
I love the Apple store and am a huge fan of all things Apple, but I don't know if I will ever understand the people who camp out for days just to be the first to get a new piece of technology.
Relief came when we found out the line wrapping around the entire block was for
the Jonas Brothers, who were performing live at the Apple Store! Although I am not familiar
with any of their songs, I totally respect and understand camping out for a music performance.
So, cheers to the Jonas Brothers and I hope the show was well worth the wait for all of the followers!

MARY-KATE OLSEN ON CROSBY STREET

Right outside of our lovely office at Housing Works Bookstore Café, we had a
celebrity sighting this week! Mary Kate Olsen, in the midst of her scandal with the feds,
was just taking a stroll on Crosby Street in SoHo. Speaking of Crosby Street
(one of our favorites in SoHo) we’ve seen a lot of filming action this summer taking place
on Crosby! Everything from fashion shoots, commercials and major motion pictures,
so keep your eye out you will definitely be seeing more of SoHo on the big screen!

Before its incarnation as a trendy locale, SoHo was known as the Cast Iron District because of the many buildings incorporating cast iron architectural elements.

In October 1962, the City Club of New York published a report on the city's underutilized commercial areas. It was called The Wastelands of New York City, and characterized SoHo as an enormous commercial slum.
